Why gutters and drip edge get treated as one job
Drip edge is the metal strip along the eaves that throws roof runoff into the gutter instead of behind the fascia board. On a lot of builder-grade first roofs in Huntersville and Cornelius, it's short, missing, or installed under the underlayment instead of over it, so water runs behind the gutter no matter how good the gutter itself is. If you're getting fascia rot or staining under a gutter that seems to be hung correctly, this is usually the reason, and we check it before assuming the gutter is the problem.
Fascia rot from years of water getting behind a bad drip edge also changes how a gutter has to be hung, since soft wood won't hold a hanger screw properly. We replace rotten fascia as part of the job rather than screwing a new gutter into wood that's already failing underneath the paint.
We size gutters and downspouts to the actual roof area draining into them, not a standard size for the house. A roof with a long unbroken run feeding one corner needs a bigger downspout or a second one, especially during the heavy summer storms that come through off the lake.
This work often comes up as a follow-on to a replacement or a flashing repair, since both jobs expose the eave line and make drip edge problems obvious the moment the old gutters come down. If we're already up there for one of those jobs, it's worth having the gutters looked at in the same visit rather than scheduling a separate call later.
Downspout placement matters as much as sizing. A downspout that dumps water three feet from the foundation on a lot that's already flat, common in some of the older Concord and Harrisburg subdivisions, just moves the drainage problem from the roof to the crawlspace. We route downspouts to daylight or tie them into existing drainage where the grading allows it, rather than leaving a splash block as the only plan for where that water actually goes. We'll also flag it plainly if grading around the foundation looks like the real long-term issue, since a gutter system can only do so much when the yard itself slopes water back toward the house.

Why does water get behind my gutters even though they look fine?
That's almost always a drip edge problem, not a gutter problem. If the metal strip along the eaves is short, missing, or tucked under the underlayment instead of over it, roof runoff gets behind the gutter instead of into it, and no amount of gutter adjustment fixes that on its own.
Do you replace fascia boards too?
Yes, we check fascia condition on every gutter job and replace any section found soft or rotten before hanging new gutters on it. Screwing new gutters into rotten wood just means they'll sag and pull loose within a season or two.
How do I know if I need bigger downspouts?
If gutters overflow during heavy rain even though they're clean and properly pitched, the downspouts are likely undersized for the roof area feeding them, common on homes with long unbroken rooflines. We size downspouts to actual drainage area rather than defaulting to a standard size.
Are seamless gutters worth it over sectional ones?
Seamless aluminum gutters are formed on site to the exact length of your roofline, which means no joints along the run to eventually leak or separate. Downspout connections still have joints, but the long horizontal runs where most leaks start are a single continuous piece.
