Sewer lines
Sewer line repair in Matthews, NC
Every drain in the house backing up at once, or a soggy patch of yard that's always wet, usually points to the main line, not a single fixture. The camera goes down first, and you see the footage before we talk about digging.

Why sewer laterals fail around here
A lot of the sewer laterals under Matthews and Pineville lots were laid in clay tile decades before PVC became standard, and clay tile joints are exactly where tree roots go looking for water. A stand of mature oaks along a Lawyers Rd or Independence Blvd lot is often the reason a line backs up every year around the same season. Charlotte's red clay also shifts more than sandier soil, which over enough decades can belly a section of pipe and let solids settle instead of flowing through.
In parts of Waxhaw and Weddington on septic rather than county sewer, a backup can mean the same root or belly problem in the line running out to the tank, not necessarily a tank issue itself, and we'll camera that stretch the same way.

How we get from backup to fixed
- Camera the full lineFrom the house to the street tap or the septic tank connection, recorded and shown on the plumber's phone right there in the driveway.
- Locate the problem preciselyA transmitter on the camera head marks the exact spot and depth of a belly, break, or root mass from the surface.
- Price for the actual repairSpot repair, pipe bursting, or a full dig, whichever the footage calls for, explained and priced before any ground is broken.
- Permit pulled where requiredSewer lateral work on county lines typically needs a permit and inspection, which we handle rather than leave to you.
- Backfill and a final camera passWe run the camera again after the repair so you see the same line clean, not just take our word for it.
What the camera commonly finds
| Root intrusion | Roots working through a clay tile joint, common on older Matthews and Mint Hill lots with mature trees near the lateral path. |
|---|---|
| Bellied pipe | A low spot where the line has settled, letting waste sit instead of draining, common where red clay has shifted over decades. |
| Collapsed or crushed section | Usually older clay tile or, less often, a section damaged by past construction or a heavy vehicle driving over it. |
| Offset joints | Sections that have shifted apart slightly, letting roots and soil into the line without a full collapse. |
Signs the problem is the main line, not a single drain
- Multiple drains backing up at the same time, especially the lowest fixture in the house
- Gurgling from the toilet when the washing machine drains
- A section of yard that stays wet or grows greener grass than the rest
- A sewage smell in the yard or crawlspace with no visible source
- Repeated clogs in the same spot despite regular cabling
Every drain in the house backed up the same afternoon. Camera showed roots in the clay tile out by the street, exactly where the old oak is.

Trenchless options where the yard allows
Not every sewer repair means trenching the whole yard. Where the line's condition and layout allow it, pipe bursting can replace a damaged clay tile lateral by pulling a new pipe through the old one's path, leaving a much smaller footprint than a full open trench. It doesn't work for every situation, particularly where a line has fully collapsed or shifted out of its original path, and we'll tell you honestly whether your yard and your line are a candidate once the camera footage is in hand.
Questions we get on the phone
How do you know if it's the sewer line and not just a clogged drain?
Multiple drains backing up together, especially the lowest one in the house, is the clearest sign. A camera run down the main line confirms it either way and shows exactly what's wrong, root intrusion, a belly, or a collapse, rather than guessing from symptoms alone.
Do I have to dig up my whole yard to fix a sewer line?
Not always. Where the damage and layout allow it, pipe bursting replaces the line with a much smaller opening than a full trench. Where the line has fully collapsed or shifted, open trenching is sometimes the only real option, and we'll say which applies after seeing the footage.
Why does my sewer back up every year around the same time?
That pattern usually points to root intrusion that grows worse as trees actively pull water, often spring through fall. Roots that get cabled out one year regrow into the same joint, which is why a camera-verified repair, not repeat cabling, is the actual fix.
How much does sewer line repair cost?
It depends heavily on what the camera finds; a spot repair is a different job than a full lateral replacement, and depth and access change it further. The plumber tells you what the repair costs after the camera inspection, before any digging starts, not as a phone estimate.
Do you handle sewer line issues on septic systems too?
Yes. The line running from the house to the tank can develop the same root or belly problems as a county sewer lateral, and we camera and repair that section the same way. See Waxhaw or Weddington for more on septic-served areas.
