De-Shedding Treatment

For the dogs that snow indoors. We release the dead undercoat at our place — so it stops releasing itself on your black pants.

Double-coated dogs — huskies, shepherds, retrievers, corgis and their many magnificent mixes — carry two coats at once: a weatherproof outer layer and a dense, downy undercoat that insulates them. Twice a year, that undercoat lets go all at once. Groomers call it "blowing coat." You call it the reason your vacuum filed for overtime.

Our de-shedding treatment intercepts the whole cycle. It starts in the tub with an undercoat-release shampoo and conditioner that loosens dead down at the follicle. Then the high-velocity dryer does what no brush at home can: it literally blows the released undercoat out of the coat in sheets, while the topcoat stays put. We finish with a methodical rake-and-comb pass, line by line, until the comb comes through clean.

The shave-down conversation, settled

Every spring, someone asks us to shave their husky "to help with the heat." We'll always say no, and here's the honest why: a double coat is climate control in both directions. It traps cool air against the skin in summer, blocks UV, and sheds rain. Clip it off and the dog is hotter, sunburn-prone, and the coat often regrows patchy and wrong — sometimes permanently. De-shedding gives you everything shaving promises (a cooler, lighter, dramatically less shedding dog) without sacrificing the system that protects them.

Timing matters more than frequency. In Charlotte the big blows usually land in March–April and again in September–October. Book a de-shed at the first sign — fluff tufting at the hips and neck is the tell — and one treatment catches most of the season. Maintenance visits every 8 weeks keep year-round shedders like labs civilized in between.

What the treatment includes

  • Undercoat-release shampoo and conditioning soak
  • High-velocity blow-out that lifts dead undercoat in sheets
  • Line-by-line undercoat rake and finishing comb
  • Coat condition report — we'll tell you when the next one's actually due

De-shedding is an add-on to any bath & brush-out or full groom, priced $20–$40 by coat density. Heavy blowers take real time, and the one-dog-at-a-time studio means we can take it — your husky won't be rushed through the part that matters most.

De-Shedding FAQs

Undercoat questions, brushed out

How much does de-shedding cost?
De-shedding is an add-on of $20–$40 on top of any bath or full groom, depending on coat density and how far into a blow the undercoat is. A husky in full spring molt sits at the top of the range; a lab in maintenance mode at the bottom.
How much less shedding will I actually see?
Most owners see a 60–80% drop in loose hair around the house for 3–4 weeks after a treatment. It's a release of hair that was already dead, done at our place instead of on your rugs.
Should I just shave my husky instead?
Please don't — and we won't. A double coat insulates against heat as well as cold and protects the skin from sunburn. Shaving it can permanently damage how it grows back. De-shedding removes the dead undercoat while keeping the protective system intact.
When do double-coated dogs shed the most?
Twice a year they "blow coat" — typically spring and fall in Charlotte, triggered by daylight changes more than temperature. Booking a de-shed at the start of each blow catches the bulk of it in one visit.
Which breeds benefit most?
Huskies, German and Australian shepherds, golden retrievers, labs, corgis, Great Pyrenees, Bernese, Akitas, and any mix that "snows" in spring. If you can pull a tuft of fluff out with your fingers, this treatment will change your life.
