Home/Services/AC Installation
Cooling · measured, not guessed

A new AC, sized by math — not by the driveway

Most replacement quotes in Charlotte happen from the truck window: same tonnage as the old unit, next size up "to be safe." We measure the house, run the load calculation, and quote a flat installed price — because an oversized AC in this humidity is a dehumidifier that quit.

What a new system costs here — real numbers first

Installed and complete, most new cooling systems in the Charlotte metro run $6,000 to $14,000. The spread comes down to size, efficiency tier and what your ductwork needs: a 2-ton, 14.3-SEER2 system for a Plaza Midwood bungalow sits near the bottom; a 5-ton, variable-speed 18-SEER2 system for a two-story Ballantyne home with duct corrections sits near the top. Whatever the number, it's flat and in writing before installation day — permits, crane (if your condenser lives somewhere interesting), haul-away and registration included.

Two things soften the price in this market: Duke Energy rebates on qualifying high-efficiency equipment and smart thermostats — we file the paperwork before we install — and 0% financing for 18 months for qualified buyers. Federal tax credits for high-efficiency systems can stack on top; we'll hand you the certificate your accountant needs.

Replacing a system that died mid-heat-wave? We keep installation slots open for emergency replacements and can usually set the new system within 48 hours.

Why sizing is the whole ballgame in Charlotte

Charlotte summer isn't dry heat — it's 70-percent-humidity heat. An oversized AC blasts the temperature down so fast it shuts off before it dehumidifies, leaving you at 72° and clammy, with a system that short-cycles itself to an early death. An undersized one runs forever and never catches a 98° afternoon. We run a Manual J load calculation on every replacement: square footage, window orientation, insulation, duct condition, even which way your afternoon sun lands. The result is a system that holds its number through a Carolina heat wave and actually dries the air on the way.

Installation day, step by step

  • Morning: old equipment recovered (refrigerant reclaimed legally — EPA 608 certified), pad leveled or replaced.
  • Midday: new condenser and coil set, line set flushed or replaced, electrical brought to current code.
  • Afternoon: system charged by weight and verified by superheat/subcool readings, airflow balanced, smart thermostat configured.
  • Before we leave: supply/return temperature split measured and shown to you, warranty registered, rebate paperwork confirmed.

Equipment carries the manufacturer's 10-year parts warranty (we register it — unregistered systems quietly drop to 5), and our labor is covered for 2 years. Comfort Club members get their first year of membership included with any new system.

Replacement questions

What homeowners ask before signing

How do I know it's time to replace instead of repair?
Our written rule: when a repair costs more than $50 × the system's age in years, replacement usually wins. A $900 repair on a 14-year-old unit fails that test; the same repair on a 6-year-old unit passes easily. R-410A phase-down pricing is also making older-refrigerant repairs steadily pricier.
Should I go up a size "to be safe"?
No — especially not in Charlotte. Oversized systems cool fast but shut off before dehumidifying, which leaves the house cold and damp and shortens compressor life. The Manual J calculation exists precisely so nobody has to guess.
What Duke Energy rebates actually apply?
Rebate programs change seasonally, but qualifying high-efficiency systems and smart thermostats are regularly covered. We confirm current amounts in your quote and file the application before installation so the credit arrives without you chasing it.
Can you replace just the outdoor unit to save money?
Usually a false economy — mismatched coils wreck efficiency and most manufacturers void the warranty. If budget is the constraint, we'd rather quote a right-sized single-stage system than a Frankenstein pairing.
Will you need to redo my ductwork too?
Not always — but we pressure-test before quoting because a 17-SEER2 system breathing through crushed, leaky crawlspace ducts performs like a 13. If duct repairs matter, they're a separate line on the quote so you can see exactly what they cost.
